I am at a scientific retreat. The speaker is telling us that Kurt Vonnegut defined the phenomenon of the chrono-synclastic infundibulum, as “those places … where all the different kinds of truths fit together.”
The chief scientific officer of our Institute is saying:
“The implication is that what the cells do, is a function of what they are, their previous experiences, what’s in the serum—It almost says there may not be any hard fast truth,—that what’s true is true for that setting at that point in time for that set of experiments. How do we deal with – this is as truth?”
The speaker answers, with a twinkle in his eye: “It is a truism—that any results we obtain in the laboratory depend on conditions…Perhaps,” he says, “the thing to keep thinking is that the chrono-synclastic infundibulum, is even larger than what we are thinking—at any given time!
